2.Stay in Obihiro City
On your first day in Obihiro, we recommend starting with local
cuisine and sightseeing. Within the city, you'll find a variety
of unique gourmet spots featuring Tokachi-sourced ingredients,
Western-style restaurants focused on local produce, and renowned
shops specializing in sweets. Each establishment stands out for
its individuality and high quality. Dishes that highlight the
excellence of local ingredients are known as "Tokachi Quality"
and deliver exceptional flavor. Here, we'll introduce must-visit
restaurants perfect for the start of your journey!
1.Buta-don (Pork Bowl)
When it comes to Obihiro, the must-try local specialty is
definitely "Buta-don" (pork bowl)! This dish, featuring savory
grilled pork topped with a sweet and savory sauce, has been
beloved by locals and visitors alike for many years. Here are
two highly recommended restaurants:
・Panchou – The Original Buta-don Restaurant
Founded in 1933, Panchou is the birthplace of Buta-don, created by the restaurant’s first owner. Carefully selected pork is slowly grilled over charcoal and coated in a special secret sauce, resulting in an exquisite pork bowl. You can choose between pork belly or loin, and pick from several portion sizes: Matsu (Pine), Take (Bamboo), Ume (Plum), and Hana (Flower). As a famous restaurant, you may often find a line outside. Please note that payment is cash only.
・Butahage – Conveniently Located Inside the Station
Butahage is a long-established Buta-don restaurant located within JR Obihiro Station. Each slice of pork is delicately grilled and generously topped with a house-made secret sauce. The aroma of charcoal grilling is irresistible, ensuring you’ll finish your bowl in no time. This spot is also very popular and is often bustling with customers. However, service is quick, so it’s best to allow a little extra time when you visit.

2.Indian Curry
"Indian Curry" is considered the soul food of Obihiro, and is
an extremely popular local curry chain. Loved by people of all
ages—children to adults—many locals even say, "I come home
just to eat Indian Curry." While it may look like a simple
European-style curry at first glance, the roux is slowly
simmered to create a rich depth of flavor, gentle sweetness,
and a wave of spices that builds with every bite. Several
types of roux are available, such as "Indian," "Vegetable,"
and "Hamburg," and you can customize your dish with a variety
of toppings. The most popular choice is the "Indian roux with
cutlet." The rice is sourced from Tokachi, reflecting a
commitment to local ingredients and sustainability. With
several locations throughout the city, it's easy to stop by
and enjoy this beloved taste of Obihiro whenever you like.
3.Ryugetsu Toscatina
Ryugetsu Toscatina is a restaurant operated by Ryugetsu, one
of Tokachi’s most renowned confectionery makers. It’s a
stylish spot beloved by both locals and visitors—perfect for a
meal during your sightseeing. You can enjoy beautifully
presented dishes such as authentic pasta, doria, and gratin,
all made with plenty of Tokachi-grown ingredients. Healthy
plate lunches featuring seasonal vegetables are also popular,
making it a great choice for those who want a satisfying meal.
After your meal, be sure to try some of Ryugetsu’s specialty
sweets. The signature menu item, the “Toscatina” cheesecake,
as well as seasonal parfaits and freshly baked desserts, are
all not to be missed. There’s also a souvenir shop on site, so
it’s a great place to pick up gifts after your meal.
4.Kita no Yatai
Located in the heart of Obihiro, "Kita no Yatai" is a lively
yatai (food stall) village beloved by both locals and
tourists. Stretching about 50 meters, this street is lined
with around 20 small stalls offering a wide variety of dishes,
including izakaya-style fare made with local ingredients,
ramen, sushi, yakitori, French cuisine, and creative
specialties. The real charm of the yatai experience is the
cozy atmosphere, which brings you close to fellow diners and
friendly stall owners—making casual conversation and sharing
drinks almost inevitable. You can savor the flavors at a
single stall or hop between several to enjoy a range of tasty
options—both styles are highly recommended!
5.Horse-drawn Carriage Bar
Obihiro’s “Horse-drawn Carriage Bar” is, as the name suggests,
a bar where you can enjoy drinks while riding a horse-drawn
carriage. This unique and gradually growing adult-oriented
activity is gaining popularity as a sightseeing experience.
Inside the carriage, you’ll find local sake, craft beer, and
non-alcoholic beverages, so even those who don’t drink alcohol
can enjoy the ride. As a beautifully illuminated, classic
carriage leisurely makes its way through the streets of
Obihiro, you can savor your drink and enjoy an extraordinary
and unforgettable atmosphere.

Totepo Kobo is a stylish café and pastry shop known for its
cheesecakes made with local cheese and milk, located about a
10-minute walk from Obihiro Station. The cozy wooden building
creates a calm atmosphere and often attracts lines of both
locals and tourists. The “Tokachi Fromage” series is highly
recommended for its rich and melt-in-your-mouth texture. Every
dessert highlights the flavor of the ingredients, making them
irresistible for cheese lovers. Cakes and baked goods modeled
after the popular Hokkaido wild bird, the Long-tailed Tit
(Shimaenaga), are also highly recommended as souvenirs—their
fluffy white, adorable designs are almost too cute to eat. The
adjoining café space is perfect for a relaxing break, where
visitors can savor cake and coffee in comfort—making it an ideal
spot for a pause during your travels.
4.Cranberry Main Store (Nishi 2-Jo Minami, Obihiro City)
The last shop we’d like to introduce is Cranberry Main Store, a
long-established confectionery in Obihiro. This shop is famous
for its impressively large “Sweet Potato” desserts! Each one
looks just like a real roasted sweet potato, with sizes ranging
from 500 grams to over 1 kilogram. Despite its size, it’s
elegantly sweet and surprisingly easy to eat. The desserts are
sold by weight, so you can select the size that suits you best—a
fun and unique feature. In addition to their famous sweet
potato, the shop offers a variety of cookies, pound cakes, and
other baked goods, all made with carefully selected ingredients
and a gentle flavor. There is also an eat-in space where you can
enjoy freshly baked treats right on the spot. Cranberry is
beloved as a longtime favorite for both locals and those looking
for the perfect gift.
3.Tokachi-Obihiro Airport
For your return journey, depart from Tokachi’s gateway to the
skies, Tokachi-Obihiro Airport. Just like on your way in, we
recommend using the Takushoku “Airport Shuttle Bus” to get to
the airport. The bus conveniently departs from right in front of
your hotel, making it ideal for those with large luggage or
plenty of souvenirs.
