Basic Information About Kushiro City

Basic Information About Kushiro City Located on the eastern side
of Hokkaido along the Pacific coast, Kushiro City is the sixth
most populous port town in Hokkaido. It is surrounded by the vast
natural beauty characteristic of Eastern Hokkaido, including the
Kushiro Wetlands and Akan-Mashu National Park. Kushiro Port, which
recorded the highest fish catch in Japan in 2023, is known for its
abundance of fresh seafood that arrives daily. The city is also
famed for its unique local cuisine, including "zangi,"
"supakatsu," and "Kushiro soba." Moreover, Kushiro is famously
known as a city "cool enough to make you laugh." The highest
average temperature from July to September is around 20°C, and
it's rare for temperatures to exceed 30°C even in the peak of
summer. Thanks to its refreshing climate and excellent living
environment, Kushiro has ranked first in Hokkaido for 12
consecutive years since the fiscal year 2011 for the Hokkaido
Short-stay Living Experience program.

Enjoying Gourmet Food in Kushiro

1.Robatayaki
When visiting Kushiro, be sure to savor "robatayaki," a culinary
delight originating from Kushiro. This dish involves grilling
seafood and vegetables over a charcoal hearth surrounded by
seating, allowing diners to enjoy a unique dining experience.
The name "robatayaki" comes from the imagery of enjoying food at
the hearth's edge. A perfect complement to this grilled fare is
Kushiro's local sake, "Fukutsukasa," warmed on the hearth as
"dara-kan," which pairs excellently with seafood. Kushiro boasts
dozens of robata restaurants, and here are a few recommendations
for first-time visitors.
1.Robata Scale (Robata Uroko)
A long-established restaurant founded in 1975, Robata Scale is
highly regarded by locals. Sake is warmed beside the grill,
and you can enjoy Kushiro’s local sake Fukutsukasa as
"dara-kan."
2.Sumiyaki Robata Chikuzen
At "Sumiyaki Robata Chikuzen," you can enjoy fresh seafood
unique to Kushiro, a port town, and the blessings of

2.Kushiro Washo Market
In 2023, Kushiro Port reclaimed the title of Japan’s top-ranking
port for fish haul volume, a position it hadn't held for 32
years. The fresh seafood caught there gathers at the "Kushiro
Washo Market," established in 1954. It's one of Hokkaido's three
major markets, alongside Hakodate's Morning Market and Sapporo's
Nijo Market, featuring around 60 shops in a row. The market's
most popular dish is "Katte Don," where you customize your own
seafood bowl by choosing your toppings. Aside from a wide
variety of local souvenirs from the Eastern Hokkaido area, the
market also offers the option to ship fresh seafood to other
regions. Located just about a five-minute walk from Kushiro
Station, it's a must-visit spot.
3.Supakatsu
Kushiro City takes pride in this local dish, "Supakatsu." It
features a generous portion of spaghetti with rich meat sauce
topped with a hefty tonkatsu served on a sizzling iron plate.
When it was first created, pork meat was still considered a
luxury ingredient, leading to the idea of indulging by having it
as a cutlet atop the dish. Originally popular among locals,
Supakatsu gradually became a sought-after dish attracting
tourists. Despite its overflowing, large serving size, local
women manage to eat it easily—a fascinating sight.
Izumiya
Among the locals, the birthplace of Supakatsu, "Restaurant
Izumiya," is particularly beloved. Founded in 1960, this
long-established Western-style restaurant serves Supakatsu with
a perfectly balanced demi-glace sauce that makes it enjoyable
until the very last bite. Other unique menu items include
"Piccata," a Neapolitan with an omelet on top, and
"Izumiya-style" spaghetti loaded with various ingredients—all
popular for their originality. The main store is approximately a
15-minute walk from Kushiro Station.
