Board the Abashiri Drift Ice Sightseeing
Icebreaker “Aurora”
This sightseeing ship moves forward while breaking the drift ice floating on the sea. The large vessel “Aurora” provides a comfortable ride with minimal rolling as it crushes the ice, making it suitable even for those prone to seasickness. The first floor has free seating, allowing you to enjoy the drift ice up close at eye level. On the reserved-seat second floor, you can watch the icebreaking process from right in front of you, or go out to the observation deck to experience the overwhelming panorama of drifting ice as far as the eye can see. You may even catch glimpses of seals resting on the ice or Steller’s sea eagles, and sometimes spot red foxes or Ezo deer who have ventured onto the ice from land.
With the newly built “Aurora 3” small sightseeing boat launched in 2023, you can also enjoy watching underwater footage of the drift ice, shown on monitors inside the ship, shot by underwater drones. Drift ice arrives in Abashiri as early as late January and, compared to Shiretoko, is less densely packed, allowing you to admire the blue sea peeking through the gaps between the ice.
Note: The Aurora ticket included in the Winter Abashiri Bus package is for non-reserved seating.

Visit to the Abashiri Prison Museum

Visit to the Abashiri Prison Museum
The old Abashiri Prison, once feared among inmates as “the hardest place in Japan to escape from” and used as the setting for a famous manga, is now preserved as the “Abashiri Prison Museum.” The actual buildings once used as a prison have been maintained as a museum, showcasing the harsh lives of the inmates. The five radiating cell blocks, as well as the main hall and chapel, are designated Important Cultural Properties of Japan. In addition to touring the facilities, the Prison Experience Theater offers video exhibits that allow you to relive the tough prison labor from 120 years ago. Since this is an outdoor museum, you will spend much of your time walking in the bitter cold, which may help you feel what the prisoners once went through. At the on-site “Prison Cafeteria,” you can try the same meals currently served to inmates at Abashiri Prison.
Note: The Winter Abashiri Bus includes lunch.
approx. 50 minutes
Visit to Okhotsk Ryuhyo Museum
Located at the summit of Mount Tento in Abashiri City, this science museum is themed around drift ice and the Sea of Okhotsk. In the Drift Ice Experience Terrace inside the museum, you can touch real drift ice in a room chilled to minus 15 degrees Celsius. The popular "Shibare Experiment" lets you freeze a wet towel by swinging it around in the cold air. On another floor, you’ll find exhibits of rare creatures such as the "clione," also known as the Angel of Drift Ice. From the observation terrace on the 3rd floor, you can enjoy a spectacular 360-degree panoramic view that stretches from Lake Abashiri to Lake Notoro, and all the way to the Shiretoko mountain range across the Sea of Okhotsk. If the timing is right, you may even see the drift ice coming ashore. At the café inside, you can enjoy the “Drift Ice Soft Cream,” a salted caramel flavored ice cream made with Okhotsk sea salt.

Board the “Ryuhyo Monogatari” Train from Kitahama Station to Abashiri Station
After lunch, board the winter-limited sightseeing train “Ryuhyo Monogatari,” which runs along the Okhotsk coastline. This line offers some of Hokkaido’s most breathtaking winter scenery, with views of the Sea of Okhotsk covered in drift ice. At Kitahama Station, known as "the closest station to the drift ice” and used as a location for many movies and dramas, you can gaze at the drift ice on the Okhotsk Sea. The train also stops at Hamakoshimizu Station, where you can shop for souvenirs at the nearby roadside station. Limited edition merchandise is also available for purchase in the sales area on board. Since this train operates only from late January to early March each year, it’s a good idea to check the schedule in advance.

Oshinkoshin Falls
Along National Route 334 on the way to the World Natural Heritage Site of Shiretoko, you will find a waterfall selected as one of the 100 Best Waterfalls in Japan. 'Oshinkoshin' comes from the Ainu language meaning 'the place where Ezo spruce grow in clusters.' As its name suggests, the sight of water thundering down from a cliff among the forest is truly impressive. Since the water splits into two flows partway down, it’s also known as the 'Twin Beautiful Falls.' In the harsh winter, you can see a 'frozen waterfall'—ice that remains even as the water continues to flow—creating a scene that is like a work of ice art. From the observation deck at the top of the falls, you can take in a vast white sea covered with drift ice.

Registered under the Ramsar Convention, Notsuke Peninsula is Japan’s largest sandspit, called 'the end of the earth.' In winter, there is a limited-time tour where you can see the 'hyouheisen'—a horizon not of water, but of ice. Walking across the pristine snowy fields, you’ll come to 'Todowara,' a desolate and mysterious landscape. The round-trip course takes about 2 hours, but for those who are not confident in their stamina, are concerned about the cold, or are short on time, a mini-walk tour perfect for taking stunning photos is also very popular. In addition, there are bird- and seabird-watching tours, focusing on unique species such as Steller’s sea eagles and white-tailed eagles that visit the Notsuke Peninsula. Please note: All tours require advance reservation, and there is no rental of winter clothing or gear available.

Mashu Lake First Observatory
Mashu Lake, also known as the 'Foggy Lake Mashu,' is famous for its fantastical sapphire-blue surface, called 'Mashu Blue.' From late January to late February in winter, the water becomes even more transparent, making the blue color even deeper and offering a beautiful contrast with the surrounding white snowy landscape. During this season, you may also witness the lake surface freezing over, creating natural ice art. From the First Observatory, you can also go snowshoe hiking, allowing you to experience Mashu Lake's nature up close. Since many areas in Hokkaido are dangerous during winter, it is recommended to join a guided tour.
Due to time constraints, guided tours cannot be used when riding the Kushiro-Shiretoko bus line.

On the popular 'Hyohyotaru Tour,' you can have fun on the frozen surface of Lake Akan with SNOWDOGs, fat bikes, snowshoes, igloo building, and marvel at 'frost flowers,' ice crystals blooming like a flower field, and ice bubbles trapped beneath the frozen surface—unique sights well worth seeing. You can also take part in tours where you try smelt fishing on the frozen lake and have your catch cooked as tempura on the spot. Local tour providers at Akanko Onsen offer countless activities such as snowmobiling, banana boating, ice skating, and more—so many you couldn’t experience them all in a single day! It pairs perfectly with Kushiro’s local sake "Fukutsukasa," and enjoying “Dara-kan”—warm sake gently heated on the robata—is highly recommended.
Among the many options, “Robata Uroko,” an established restaurant founded in 1975, is especially popular, with a large robata grill surrounded by counter seating and offering a wonderfully traditional atmosphere. Here, you can savor plenty of fresh seafood and mountain delicacies unique to the port town of Kushiro, along with local sake.
