Basic Information about Eastern Hokkaido
Hokkaido is home to some of Japan's most renowned hot spring
resorts. Eastern Hokkaido, in particular, boasts numerous onsen
locations due to the presence of active volcanoes scattered
throughout the region. The water quality and characteristics vary
by area, allowing visitors to enjoy a diverse range of hot spring
experiences—one of Eastern Hokkaido's main attractions. Many
accommodations also offer seasonal seafood and mountain
delicacies, enhancing the luxurious experience and often turning
first-time visitors into repeat guests. Additionally, some inns
feature rooms with open-air baths, so those who might be
uncomfortable with large communal baths or international visitors
can relax with peace of mind. In this guide, we will introduce
recommended hot spring accommodations and day-trip onsens,
dividing them into five distinct areas!
02
Lake Akan Onsen Area

Located about an hour by car from Tancho Kushiro Airport, the
gateway to Eastern Hokkaido, is Lake Akan. Lake Akan is a tourist
destination where you can find Marimo, a special natural monument,
and closely experience the lifestyle and culture of the indigenous
Ainu people. On the southern side of Lake Akan, various hot spring
inns and restaurants are lined up. With its colorless, odorless
alkaline water, known for its smooth texture, it is often referred
to as the "hot spring for everyone," attracting visitors of all
ages. After bathing in these waters, your skin will feel smooth
and hydrated.
1.Recommended Onsen Accommodations
Akan Yuku no Sato Tsuruga
This inn is managed by the Tsuruga Group, which operates
resort hotels and onsen accommodations across Hokkaido. Its
large bath area, offering seven different types of baths, and
the open-air baths with breathtaking panoramic views of Lake
Akan and the Akan Mountain Range are particularly popular. The
rooftop features a newly constructed "dome-shaped observation
sauna" with the world's first insulated glass, offering a
premium relaxation experience as you gaze up at the stars and
surrounding nature. In the evening, guests can enjoy a buffet
with a variety of dishes or a gourmet Japanese and teppanyaki
course meal featuring seasonal Hokkaido ingredients. With
exemplary hospitality, this is the perfect place to savor a
truly extraordinary experience. Additionally, day-trip bathing
options are available, allowing visitors to enjoy the
luxurious onsen without staying overnight.
Akan Forest Tsuruga Resort Hanayuuka

Lodge Turano" is equipped with a private sauna. You can enjoy
an authentic Finnish-style barrel sauna with low temperature
and high humidity. Meals are served buffet-style featuring

dresses. This special accommodation helps create memorable
experiences for your trip.

reservation. It is a hidden gem onsen inn for those who wish
to spend quiet and leisurely time. Meals consist of kaiseki
cuisine using abundant seasonal ingredients, and guests can
choose between Western or Japanese-style breakfast in the
morning. You might even spot groups of Ezo deer or kitsune
through the window during your meal.
03
Kawayu Onsen Area

Located about an hour and a half drive north from Kushiro City,
the Kawayu Onsen area can be found within Akan Mashu National
Park. This hot spring town is enveloped in the scent of sulfur and
surrounded by the great natural beauty of Lake Mashu to the east
and Lake Kussharo to the west. Nearby is Mount Io, an active
volcano, and footbaths created using naturally sourced hot spring
water are installed throughout the town. True to its name, the
sulfur-rich waters are characterized by their strong acidity. It
is one of the few places in Japan with a volcanically unique hot
spring containing strongly acidic hydrogen sulfide, attracting
regular visitors from afar. Its therapeutic waters have long been
cherished by many. After bathing, you'll feel your body thoroughly
warmed from the core.

Tokachigawa Onsen Area
Driving about an hour and a half west from Kushiro City brings you
to Tokachigawa Onsen. This is a major tourist attraction known for
the vast natural beauty that spreads across the Tokachi Plains,
including birch tree-lined roads and the Millennium Forest. It is
also one of Hokkaido's most renowned onsen areas, famous for its
"Moor Onsen," which is well-known throughout Japan. The hot
spring's distinctiveness comes from the organic plant materials,
like reeds, that have accumulated over millennia along the Tokachi
River. As the spring water flows through these deposits, it
becomes rich in plant-derived organic substances. The brown,
cloudy, alkaline water is full of moisturizing components, making
it highly effective for beautifying the skin and earning it the
nickname "nature's moisturizer." Its rarity has also led to its
designation as a Hokkaido Heritage site; a must-visit destination
at least once in a lifetime.
